Movie Review - Dream Girl

My dad's generation would remember "Dream Girl" as a love story starring the then heart throb of millions - Dharmendra and the graceful beauty - Hema Malini. Bollywood lovers of my generation still hum that unforgettable song - "ड्रीम गर्ल - ड्रीम गर्ल - किसी शायर की गज़ल..."

The Modern day "Dream Girl" is about neither a dream nor a girl. It's about a nightmare and a male who is a girl. It gives an altogether new connotation to the word "Dream Girl".

It is light, breezy, sweet story of a lower middle class boy of UP - struggling to survive in a tough real world with just one unique talent of his. That uniqueness leads him into a misfit of a job. His unique talent helps him excel in a job that was not made for him in the first place. So far so good - however, due to his job he ends up creating
a virtual world of imaginations & dreams and in the process entangles himself with a few real characters in his life, jeopardising his relationship with his fiancee and his reputation.

And so, the audience is taken through a tipsy topsy journey of smiles, giggles, laughs in this interesting situational comedy, some great timing in delivery creating a largely clean, light hearted, comedy. Fell short of being a laugh riot and still is a very watchable movie.

"Dream Girl" is not without its flaws. First, it seems stretched at times. Better editing could have surely made the movie more interesting. In fact, one doesn't know what three fairly long songs were doing in the movie. The audience wouldn't have noticed absence of at least two of them. Or for that matter - the emotional scene where the son revels on the goodness of his father innocently sleeping, could have been completely done away with.

Second, peculiarities of a few characters have been  accentuated too strongly to the extent of they becoming a caricature and so they stop generating comedy. Example - father becoming a muslim and changing the entire environment around him was too much. Similarly the character of a frustrated female boss remains far from convincing.

Third, there was no need to use double entendres around Hindi cuss words to generate comedy. It offers a certain touch of crudeness to the otherwise clean and cute narrative. Or maybe I am just being a prude - because the young generation in the hall did not seem to mind at all and were happily sharing a laugh.

Finally and the most important one - honestly the unique talent of the protagonist "pooja" does not really seem so enticing that everybody in the world from a teenager to a father of a nubile boy bends over their backs to fall for her.

Having said that this movie was not created to be logical in any case and it did touch the funny bone of everybody in the hall so many times that we can overlook its flaws. Like in most movies of this genre the director does get lost in the climax but quickly recovers and in the end manages well. In fact, the editing towards the end of the movie seems to be jerky leaving a feeling that the director now wants to end in a hurry, while he was dragging his feet in most parts.

Ayushman Khurana is a lucky guy, he often gets movies that revolve character he is playing. One must say that he also has the courage to take risky and experimental roles - from vicky donor to Dream girl - it has paid off well for him. Relaxed comedies is where he is best at and so this role suits him well and he does a fine job. However, I keep feeling that he fails to live up to the challenging characters he often gets. Manjot singh since his role in Fukrey is type casted as a dumb sardar which he delivers with boring regularity. Vijay Raaj, Anu kapoor and Rajesh sharma are accomplished actors and they delivered their side of over acting quite well. Nusrat is beautiful and bubbly as required - however her character did not have much scope to show her acting - so she lends the needed cuteness factor in a movie which is again full of male characters.

This is one of those movies that do not have any unforgettable moments and yet overall a good package. Nice one time watch - if you are looking for some harmless funny time with family/friends. Just don't take your mind to the theatre and enjoy.
